¿What does the new European labelling for electric cars and charging points consist of and how does it work?
It consists of the use of a label as a visual tool, which will help you select the appropriate recharge option for your vehicle. The shape that will appear on the labels of the electrical interfaces is a hexagon with a letter, as it appears in the image below, you just have to find the charging point labeled with the same image as your vehicle and use it.
When does the EN17186 standard come into force?
The new EN17186 standard on European labelling of electric cars and charging points will enter into force on 20 March 2021.
In which countries will its use be mandatory?
The new labels for electric vehicles will be implemented in the 27 member states of the European Union; in the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) -Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway-; and in Macedonia, Serbia, Switzerland and Turkey.
Who should have this new labelling?
All rechargeable electric vehicles (batteries and plug-in hybrids) (mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles, quad bikes, passenger cars, light, heavy commercial vehicles, buses and coaches) registered as of 20 March 2021 and all recharge stations in the European Union.
Where will the labels be put?
They must appear in a clear and visible way for the consumer both in the vehicles and in the charging stations as follows:
- In the vehicle it must be located near the charging socket.
- Also in the separate charging cables, in the owner’s manual or in the electronic manual of the vehicle and in the storage place of the connector cable.
- In public access charging stations there must be a label next to the power socket and for stations that have several charging points each charging point must be labeled according to the voltage range.
- At dealerships.
¿What features should labels have for electric cars and charging points?
- Long durability.
- Excellent readability.
- Weather resistance (dust, moisture, liquids, greases).
- Mechanical resistance (scratches, bumps).
